NAMI News: April 2020

Dear NAMI San Luis Obispo County members and friends,

The last few weeks have reminded us of our deep connection and shared vulnerability as one human family. There is not a person in the entire world who is not concerned about how COVID-19 is affecting their family, friends and their community. But out of the uncertainty and hardship we’ve seen stories of compassion emerge. We have heard stories of hope and courage. Our heroes today are healthcare professionals, hospital staff, first responders, essential workers at our grocery stores, and frontline law enforcement personnel. To them we extend our heartfelt gratitude and prayers for their safety and wellbeing and that of their families. We are all in this together.

As you know, the shelter at home order has interrupted our Family to Family classes, Support Groups, and Ending the Silence programs in the schools. They will be resumed as soon as we receive the all clear from San Luis Obispo County Emergency Services. However, our teachers and support group leaders remain available by phone to their students, members and potential participants. Please phone Henry Herrera at 805-440-3516 if you or someone you know would like to sign up for a future Family to Family class.  Support Group Leaders' names and contact information are included in this newsletter.

NAMI Basics on Demand is now available as a free online course available at www.nami.org for families with children from ages six to 22 experiencing emerging mental health issues. One of our members took the course and wrote a review that you can find in this newsletter.

This newsletter contains resources and information that will help see you through the coming weeks and hopefully lighten your heart. My thanks go to Katy Zweifel, NAMI SLOCO Marketing and Communications Director, for putting these items together for you. Visit the NAMI SLO County website at www.namislo.org for continued updates with resources during this time. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

I look forward to being able to join with you again at our monthly meetings at St.Stephen’s Episcopal Church when it is once again possible. Until then, keep on keeping on and remember you are braver and stronger than you know!

Be well and stay safe,

Pam Zweifel, President
